There are a few things up on our radar already! Here they are:

Climate change disproportionately affects the poor. Learn what the G8 is doing to combat this problem. Consider signing the petition below urging Stephen Harper to support this opportunity for a binding global climate treaty:

Hello Friends!

Just an update, if you haven’t heard IJM Mac has new Exec all lined up for this coming school year! Some amazing people have stepped up since several of our executives are graduating or moving on in their academic careers and we are definitely excited that you will once again see International Justice Mission McMaster around campus!

*Also just a reminder that the petition for the MDGs is still being circulated to schools across the country to be given to the Prime Minister when the G8 meets this upcoming winter. Just because schools out for most of us doesn’t mean that we will stop advocating. If you have any brilliant ideas of how to forward this campaign or know people who would like copies to circulate, please get in touch with us.

Have an Amazing Summer!

Upcoming G20 Meeting in London

The financial crisis threatens to push 90 million more people into extreme poverty according to a report this month from UK Department for International Development. For a crisis of this scale, we need a comprehensive global solution.
World leaders will gather in London for the G20 Summit early next month. With the right leadership, the summit can provide the opportunity to mitigate the impact of the financial crisis on the developing world. As President Obama steps onto the international stage for the first time, he is uniquely positioned to urge other leaders at the summit to take action.
Below is a link to a petition you can feel free to sign.

Remember, in dealing with the fundamental roots of poverty, we will address the exploitation it perpetuates, such as issues of human trafficking

North America’s first legal supervised injection site

I saw info about this on W5. Insite is North America’s first legal supervised injection site and provides a safe and supervised area for people in East Hastings, Vancouver to shoot up. These are people who do not have the ability to access normal health and social resources. It also provides detoxic. This issue is controversial and is being taken to court by the federal government. You do not have to agree, but educate yourself and learn more at:
http://www.vch.ca/sis/

Also if you want to address this issue, find your mp's email at the link below and feel free to copy the email, or write your own if you oppose the center:

I am writing to you out of concern for the Insite center, North America’s first legal supervised injection site, located in Vancouver. I am aware that the federal government is taking Insite to court to determine the legality of its existence and would like to encourage you to support the continued existence and work of this center as an important and effective human rights effort for those Canadians who are not able to access other health means or social systems. Thank you for your time and consideration,
